This semester at UNT I have been exploring color and composition. I realized in one of my painting critiques that I usually tend to use similar color palette in most of my work, usually without tonal difference in the hues used. So I've began challenging myself to apply a variety of tonal values in my colors. Also last semester while I was abroad in Florence, Italy my painting professor, Andrew Smaldone, pointed out that in my compositions I tend to pack so much information that it can look like there are multiple paintings in one painting. So I began to draw my paintings in a smaller scale to find ways to simplify my paintings to minimal lines and colors. I also take photos of my work, crop them in photoshop and recreate a smaller and simpler composition. Through this process, my work began to look more non-objective and less personal, at least to me. I am enjoying the challenge of the work I am making however I don't feel any personal connection to it, just a response to the elements and principles of art. So I feel like I am in a weird position in my practice, however I have began trying to incorporate previous motifs and marks from previous works hoping to get inspiration and more a personal reaction to the work.
